LTVP renewal is the kind of admin that gets put off until the expiry date is uncomfortably close, then suddenly involves a fortnight of scanning, payslips, and figuring out which portal you actually file in. ICA-issued and MOM-issued LTVPs renew through different systems, the fees are slightly different at renewal than first issue, and the window for filing is wider than most sponsors realise.
This guide walks through when to start, where to file, what to upload, what changes if your household has shifted since the last application, and what happens if the pass lapses before you act. The numbers and rules below reflect ICA and MOM policy current in 2026.
When to start the renewal
ICA recommends submitting the renewal application at least three months before the current LTVP expires. Three months is the floor, not the target, so build in extra time for queries or document fixes where possible.
A few situations push that timing earlier. If the sponsor is on an Employment Pass or S Pass that expires within the same year, the LTVP cannot outlast the sponsor’s main pass, so the work pass renewal needs to happen first or in parallel. If the LTVP holder is travelling abroad during the expected processing window, the in-principle approval and card collection need to be timed around that.
For MOM-issued LTVPs that hang off a work pass, employers can start the renewal up to six months ahead, which matches the work pass renewal window. The exception is dependants of EntrePass holders and Employment Pass (Sponsorship) holders, where MOM’s window is three months rather than six.
Which portal you file in
The portal depends on who issued the original LTVP, not on the sponsor’s current situation.
ICA-issued LTVPs and LTVP+ renew through the ICA e-Service at eservices.ica.gov.sg with Singpass. The sponsor logs in, opens the renewal application for the existing pass, updates whatever has changed, uploads new supporting documents, and pays the fees online.
MOM-issued LTVPs renew through EP Online or the relevant work pass portal at mom.gov.sg, with the employer or sponsor filing on behalf of the holder. A Letter of Consent for an ICA-issued LTVP renews through MOM separately from the LTVP itself.
Filing in the wrong portal is the single most common cause of a renewal stalling. A spouse on an ICA LTVP whose Singaporean partner has never touched MOM still files through ICA, even if the holder later took up work via a Letter of Consent.
Documents to prepare

Renewal asks for less paperwork than the first application, provided the household situation has not changed. The core list usually includes:
- The current digital LTVP, accessed via Singpass, MyICA, or FileSG (ICA stopped issuing physical LTVP cards on 27 February 2023; any LTVP issued or renewed since then exists only in digital form)
- The applicant’s passport bio page, valid throughout the intended LTVP period
- The sponsor’s NRIC, both sides
- The sponsor’s six most recent payslips
- A recent passport-style photograph meeting ICA’s photo specifications
- The marriage certificate if not already on file from the first application
ICA pulls CPF contribution history and IRAS Notice of Assessment in the background without the sponsor uploading them. If the financial picture is close to the line, ICA can ask for additional supporting documents through the portal.
If the marriage is intact, the same children are in the household, and the sponsor is still working in the same field, the document load is light. The next section covers what to do if anything has shifted.
What changes vs the first application
Renewal is not automatic. ICA reviews the sponsor’s financial position, marriage status, and household circumstances each cycle, but the assessment is faster and the documentation is lighter when nothing material has changed.
Three changes deserve attention.
A job change for an EP sponsor matters because the underlying work pass needs to be valid for the full LTVP renewal period. If the sponsor switches employers during the renewal window, file the new EP first and renew the LTVP under the new pass. The MOM-issued LTVP cannot outlast the sponsor’s work pass.
A change in marriage status, including separation, divorce, or remarriage, must be declared. ICA does not automatically know that a marriage has ended, but renewal under a marriage that no longer exists is a misrepresentation, and the consequences include cancellation and bars on future applications. If a divorce is in progress, speak to a consultant before filing.
A new child since the last renewal usually helps a spousal LTVP rather than hurts it, especially for LTVP+ where a Singaporean child changes eligibility. Upload the birth certificate with the renewal.
ICA’s stated target for most LTVP applications is processing within six weeks for clean files. The exception is a foreign spouse of a Singapore citizen without a prior Pre-Marriage LTVP Assessment, where processing can run up to six months. Cases that need a deeper financial look or additional clarifications can also run longer.

LTVP+ renewal and the five-year window
LTVP+ renewal works the same way mechanically as standard LTVP but on a longer cycle. The first issue is three years. The renewal can be granted for up to five years if the holder still meets the criteria, which makes LTVP+ the only family pass that lets you forget about renewal admin for half a decade at a stretch.
The renewal also keeps the Pre-approved Letter of Consent in place if it was part of the original application. The PLOC runs for the same duration as the LTVP, so a five-year LTVP+ renewal carries a five-year working right with it, with only a notification to MOM when changing employer.
LTVP+ remains restricted to foreign spouses of Singapore citizens. Spouses of PRs renew on the standard two-year cycle regardless of marriage duration. The LTVP for spouse guide covers the eligibility split if you are not sure which side you sit on.
Fees and how validity is calculated
An ICA-issued LTVP renewal carries the same fee structure as a fresh application: a S$45 submission fee at the point of filing and a S$60 issuance fee on approval, plus S$30 for a Multiple Journey Visa endorsement if the holder is from a visa-required nationality. Fees are paid online through the ICA e-Service.
The remaining time on the current LTVP does not roll over into the renewed one. The new validity period starts from the date the issuance fee is paid, not from the previous expiry date. Paying a week before expiry effectively gives up that final week.
Standard LTVP validity at renewal is up to two years. LTVP+ at renewal is up to five years. The actual length granted varies with the sponsor’s situation and, for MOM-issued cases, the sponsor’s own pass validity.
What happens if the LTVP expires
If the pass lapses before renewal is filed, the holder is treated as being in overstay status from the day after expiry. ICA does not publish a formal grace period, so do not plan around one. A short social visit pass extension may be possible at ICA’s discretion in narrow circumstances, but it is not something to rely on.
The immediate consequence is that a fresh application is needed, not a renewal. That means full documentation, a fresh fee cycle, and a longer processing window. The renewal track is closed once the current pass has expired.
The legal consequence depends on how long the overstay runs. Under the Immigration Act, overstaying for up to 90 days carries a fine of up to S$4,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both. Overstaying for more than 90 days triggers mandatory imprisonment plus a minimum of three strokes of caning. The caning is a statutory floor, not a discretionary ceiling. Where caning cannot be administered by law (for example, women, offenders over 50, or those medically unfit), the court substitutes a fine of up to S$6,000 in place of caning. Anyone in this situation should leave the country and seek advice before attempting to re-enter, because re-entry bars are common.
The practical advice: if expiry is less than a week away and the renewal has not been filed, file the renewal application today even with incomplete documents. ICA will query for what is missing, and the application sits as pending rather than expired.
Accessing the digital LTVP
ICA stopped issuing physical LTVP cards on 27 February 2023. Any LTVP granted or renewed since that date exists only as a digital pass, viewed through the Singpass app, MyICA, or FileSG. Holders who received a physical card before that cutoff still hold it until expiry, but the renewed pass will come back digital regardless.
For sponsors used to the old card-based workflow, the practical change is that there is nothing to physically lose. If the holder cannot find the digital LTVP, the fix is to sign in to Singpass or MyICA again rather than request a replacement card. ICA’s current guidance does not provide for a physical replacement on renewal.
For routine status checks during a renewal, the LTVP application status page walks through the right portal for each pass type, since ICA and MOM track separately.
